MGMT - Congratulations

Well, I'll be honest. I haven't really listened to this record yet. I only know the two songs ("Flash Delerium" and "Brian Eno") that they played on Saturday Night Live when they were on last year. I just happened to be in Urban Outfitters with the girlfriend and noticed they had a clearance vinyl section (score). 


Every time I had ever seen this in a store, it has been 30 bucks, which I always thought was a bit steep and prohibited me from picking up the record. When I saw it was only ten bucks, however, I figured now was as good a time as ever to pick it up. 


It should also be noted that the cover is a scratch off cover and has the consistency of a scratch ticket. It's very strange. I'll probably end up scratching it off some time in the near future. When I do, I'll post another update with a picture of what it looks like underneath.


Now here's to hoping that overpriced Arcade Fire The Suburbs LP goes on clearance in the near future.

Weezer - Pinkerton (Deluxe Edition)

Hey there, blogosphere. It's been a long time, I know. Anyway, I've gotten some goods over the last month or so, and I've also got some goods coming in the mail, so hopefully you'll see lots of good posts from me in the near future, that is, if you care.


Anywho, my latest acquisition is the epic 4 LP deluxe edition of Weezer's 1996 record, Pinkerton. I already own a pressing of the original version, but this deluxe edition is just too awesome to pass up. It's got over 20 bonus tracks on 3 additional LPs along with tons of new artwork and essays, as well as lyrics to most of the songs. For some strange reason, the lyrics to "El Scorcho" are not included. That's okay though, as I already know them. Also, as an FYI for those of you who don't, the line is "watching Grunge leg drop New Jack through a press table." That one seems to confuse everyone for some reason.


Back on topic though, this set is beautiful. It's a tad pricey, but if you're a Weezer fan and a collector of vinyl, I really don't see how you could pass it up. Even if you're neither. Pick up the CD, or at least download it. It's a terrific album, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a gigantic Weezer fan. I mean, come on, Pitchfork gave the reissue a 10. Yeah, that's right, Pitchfork.

Jimmy Eat World - Invented + Bonus 7"

Well wow, I took some serious time off between posts, huh? Well to make up for it, today you get a double whammy. The latest record I received is Jimmy Eat World's new album, Invented. Along with it, I also received a free 7" single with "My Best Theory" on the A-side and "Stop" on the B-side, which both are on the album as well.

The album itself is a great listen. I like it much better than Jimmy Eat World's previous effort, 2006's Chase This Light. It's just a shame that the actual physical records aren't the best.

I'll start with Invented itself. The packaging is kind of flimsy. The printed inner sleeve has the lyrics printed on it upside down, as well as being slightly too small for the record itself, so the sides were starting to tear a bit before I even took the record out for my first listen. Also, the record came with a greasy handprint on it. It doesn't affect the play whatsoever, but it kind of looks crappy.

Then we come to the "My Best Theory" single. The packaging is awful. The record is literally wrapped in a piece of paper that looks like it was xeroxed at Kinko's. I'm not going to judge because it was free, but it really looks awful. The text is super blurry and almost impossible to read. Also, it looks like they didn't even bother with a paper cutter and just cut the paper by hand. 

Moral of the story: Interscope is a lazy, lazy record company. I really enjoy the record, but the packaging itself leaves much to be desired.

Conan O'Brien - And They Call Me Mad?

Hello and welcome to my new blog, entiled "They Still Make Records?" This blog will chronicle my record collecting hobby. I'm sure you're not really that interested, but hey I'm going to blog about it anyway.

So anyway, today's first entry is for the latest record which I have purchased, Conan O'Brien's spoken word single "And They Call Me Mad?" The A-Side is Conan's take on Frankenstein and the B-Side is Jack White of the White Stripes interviewing Conan. It's pretty funny stuff, but I would say the only reason to purchase this is if you happen to be a huge Conan fan and a vinyl collector such as myself. Sweet picture of Conan on the front of this thing too. It also comes in a limited edition 3 color vinyl, but I was not lucky enough to be one of the 50 random people to receive that.
